Culture: Division or Diversity?

An interesting question was raised by commenter spaceagesage about our poem “what is culture?” (likely to the last line “do we need another word to further divide”) that prompted this post, and I hope to address it.

I feel many are too quick to embrace labels, branding themselves (and others) as full incarnations of some concept, set of cultural currents, or lifestyle. What is often overlooked, likely because its so obvious, is to first acknowledge our shared humanity. Engaging as individuals, instead of as representatives of some group or other, will more likely increase the potential of understanding, instead as seeing one another as walking sets of memeplexes.

In social situations I’ve been asked the dreaded question “What’s your background?”, usually a innocent question fueled by curiosity and as a conversational icebreaker. It’s likely because there are some visual distinctions in appearance and I appear to have come from somewhere else, despite the fact that I speak fluent english. I came here as a young child so have no great insight into “another culture”. So I pleasantly reply that I’ve lived here most of my life, and that’s that. Then I feel we can engage as individuals without the other innocently constructing bias based on some past experience of a culture or ethnicity.

The relationship between identity and culture is a deep, complex one that we hope to explore in future posts. In a crowded world with great potential for conflict, the question of culture cannot be simply dismissed as a semantic one. How we negotiate this question may be pivotal on how we deal with common challenges we’re likely to face in the near future.

Insecurities of the Flesh

I wanna be sexy
I just feel ugly

I want someone to like me
I want someone to love me.

Am I too thin
Am I too fat

I just want to eat
I don’t care what people think
I just want to purge
I don’t care what people think
Oh how a little part of me gets lost inside
I retreat, I hide
I just want to be left alone
to die a little inside

I want someone to like me
I want someone to love me

My waist is too big
my waist is too round
My dick is too small
my dick is too long
My boobs are too big
or are they to small

I want someone to like me
I want someone to love me

Why do they all hate me
My physical scars
Which sears my soul
Why do I feel defeated
The images I see  are always
one of insecurities.

I want someone to like me
I want someone to love me

Blame the fashion , blame the T.V. ,
Blame playboy centerfold page number 3
Blame ourselves take a true look at ourselves
Why do I believe the lens
That defines what is  beauty
The mind becomes infected
by their carnival of vanity
reflected in a distorted mirror

That filter showing “what is”wrong”,
instead of what is beautiful

Eroding self confidence…
That distortion exchanged
for a  fistful of dollars
Why do they prosper
from our self-hatred?

Find the spirit
Find the soul
Find true beauty
which can only be defined by oneself

Find love in myself
Find love in life

I want to like me
I want to love me

I will shed my layers
I will shed my skin
I will shed my insecurities
I will transform from within

I will find that sacred space
I will find that balance
I will find peace
One day at a time

Technologically Advanced, Socially Fucked

When we talk of peace
We talk about war.
When we write about peace
We inevitably write about war.
When we dream of peace
We still see war.
Which reality do we believe
Which reality do we manifest.
Resolve the war within in our minds
Until then we shall not know peace.

The images we see
Do they reflect the world we live in ?
Images bombard us day and night
of strife, violence, hunger and poverty

where is the joy?
Where is the love?
Where is peace?

We stand alone
We forget community
We struggle alone
We get confused by the messages
delivered to us through different forms
of technology.

Television, computers, messengers
and e-mails, texting and cel phones.
Have we lost our way of communicating
to one another ?

We fear the strangers.
They have now become the new demon.
No longer the ones we read
from the many books that have been written
so long ago.
Still passed on to instill a new fear.
Fear of one another.

Trust only a higher power
Not the power within’
What is this “ higher power”?
Have we lost touch
with our inner selves.

Are we so out of touch
that we have lost faith in humanity
Faith in ourselves
Stop and listen

The noise of technology
drowns out the song in our soul.

Express your true voice
Find your own voice
Find your individuality
create a new self
Not what a 30 second spot
magazines or even Oprah
define who you are.

Turn off the television
Tune out even this blog
Make your own choices
We need no more sheep.
We need more individuals.
We need more love
which has many new faces.
